New front door

One of the projects that we did this weekend was to paint our front door.

It was painted red several years ago and although I loved the color, I was ready for something new.

I wanted something bright and different so I gave my family some blue options. They chose the blue they liked best, which we call Tardis Blue because it reminds us of Doctor Who's Tardis. It is actually Valspar "Deep Space" at Lowe's.

The hubs and Eve got busy painting and here is what our process looks like:

I never buy drop cloths, I use old sheets!

Now side by side:

I decided I wanted the white window frames painted this time and I am glad I did. I will tell you though, that they are plastic and the paint had trouble sticking. Looking back we should have primed them first.

We love how it turned out. The color is so bright and changes the appearance of our front porch. It's amazing what a little can of paint can do to change how your house feels and looks.

I made the wreath a few months ago, you can find out how to make it here

  1. Looooooooove this! I've been throwing around the idea of painting our front door a fun color. It's like a muted hunter green right now- the antithesis of fun. What kind of paint did you use? Regular indoor paint or some special paint for outside?

    1. Thanks :) The paint we used was Valspar Ultra paint + primer satin/interior. The thing is, though, is that our door is not exposed to elements (rain, snow, sun) much because we have a screen/glass storm door that helps protect it, which is why we thought indoor would be fine. If your door is exposed to elements, you might want to check on outdoor.

    2. We've got a storm door, too. I'm going to try and convince my husband to do this when he gets back in town next week. I'm thinking a nice sunny yellow :)

    3. Sunny yellow would be fantastic!! It would help feel sunnier during my Indiana winters!!

  3. I see that your family has a penchant for bright colors, but I do have to say that you all have great taste. I would have loved to see a picture of the door from outside your house though to see what kind of overall feel it provides. For now, I guess I'll have to take your word that it makes your porch brighter. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for stopping by and for the compliments! I didn't show a pic of the front porch because the front porch is under construction and it is ghastly right now. Hopefully soon I can show a front porch shot.

  4. Nice choice of color! It’s amazing how color can make such a big difference on the ambiance of your home. How old is your door now, btw? Did you check if it has some damage before painting it? It might need a little repair. If it does, I am afraid painting over it won't do any good. I hope it was still in good shape before you painted the whole thing. But like I said, wonderful choice of color! Bravo!

    1. Thanks :) We love the color too. Our door is about 3 years old. We didn't see anything that needed repaired so hopefully it will be fine. Thanks for the advice, I will know to check for that next time.

  5. I will always prefer blue over any other color! Though red already looks good, still, it was a wise decision to repaint it and change it to blue. It's important to be careful with your color choices for it can affect the entire exterior of your house! Mendy, you did a great job!

  6. Amazing that you have your child to help you do the painting and the remodelling work. Try to get my kids involved in DIY but they prefer to read and play on their computers. Thank you for sharing these pictures and showing us your beautiful home, blue is the perfect color and is one of my all time favorites, thanks.
